Former co-owner Kileen Limvere was in the shop when the calls came in. The woman sounded like she was in tears now. “I just didn’t want her to be upset, but I also didn’t know how to help her.” “I was really trying to help the lady solve her issue,” Swanson said. Both Fesler and Swanson re-enact their simultaneous, “Ugh,” for story-telling effect. “She was talking so fast I literally had to say, ‘I’m going to have my boss call you back, I’m sorry,’ and hung up the phone.”Ī third time, the phone rings. “That’s the point I clocked out,” Fesler said. Fesler said it freaked her out a bit, but she leaned into a calm demeanor. She asked if Fesler was in connection with a family of scammers. She started speaking about scammers and a hard life getting by on coupons. The woman sounded increasingly frustrated. Fesler tried to recreate the conversation with her own twang for effect. Then the phone rang again and Fesler answered it. Swanson, running out of options and suggestions, told the woman that she’d take the inquiry to her boss. They’d recently hosted a Harry Potter party with prizes, but none was a DVD player. Had the coffee shop raffled a DVD player? They have hosted a number of fundraisers, silent auctions and giveaways, but the prizes are not usually electronics. Swanson found the call a little strange, but not out of the realm of possibility. She spoke in what’s been described as a weird and theatrical take on a Southern accent. 21, a woman called the shop and stated she had won a raffle for a DVD player. And now the coffee house will be featured on a national television show. Swanson doesn’t think the shop would garner the best response to a prank call because the staff is pretty unflappable and has heard a lot.īut three phone calls changed that. She works at the Red Rooster Coffee House - the flea market is adjacent to it. There are always those calls where someone has an odd request, like “go find my ex-husband in the flea market,” said barista Hannah Swanson. It wasn’t a completely weird call to come into the coffee shop.
